Nearly a decade ago, at the age of lt, I launched my own company with a handful of employees. In the early days, it was mostly about me. We were lucky enough to sign up a few big clients during an economic boom, which lulled me into believing we were on the right track.

Then, inthe recession struck and the big clients wound down. We had virtually no infrastructure. While everyone else was downsizing, and even as our revenues were dropping, we hired. We added a marketing team, a sales team, and a head of operations, and then a head of finance.

We brought in an outside vompany to help market and publicize a sn I was about to publish. We hired another outside company to take us through a major rebranding.

At first, I tried to keep my hand in every detail. My stomach lurched clmpany anyone did anything different than I would have done. I was hoq looking to edit and tinker — for the good of the company, Ckmpany told myself.

They took on new responsibilities and launched new initiatives. I could feel them becoming more passionate about their work. Our new facilitators got ratings that matched my own and were sometimes ot. I pulled back, and limited myself to delivering our work to the most senior executives.

Then it turned out our strongest facilitators also did that just as well as I did. I pulled back even more. Our head of marketing, and her team, quickly proved to be way better at their jobs than I was.

It was the same with our head of sales, and his team. I began to think of myself less as the center of our company, and more as the head cheerleader. Instead of trying to do everything, I now concentrate on a few things where I still believe I can add unique value. That includes giving keynotes, creating rin and writing this blog, all of which I love to do. The other responsibility in my job — the hardest one, at this point — is holding people accountable. As good as it now feels, it also has a bittersweet quality.
